Weekly & Biweekly Cuts

The grass sets the schedule. We keep up with it.

Grass does not grow at the same speed all year, and a good schedule follows it. MU Extension says cool-season grasses like tall fescue grow fastest in spring and fall, when it is 60 to 75 degrees, and slow down in the heat of summer. Warm-season grasses like zoysia do the opposite and grow hardest from May through September. MU says some weeks in spring and fall a fescue lawn needs cutting every five to six days, and zoysia can need the same pace in midsummer.

That is where weekly and biweekly come in. MU's rule is to take no more than a third of the blade at a time. In the spring flush, waiting two weeks can mean the grass gets far past that, so weekly cuts make sense. When summer heat slows fescue down, MU says it can be mowed less often, and every other week often keeps up. We set the schedule to your grass and adjust it as the season changes, instead of mowing on a calendar while the lawn does something else.

Around Joplin the season is long. MU's frost guide, using the Joplin Regional Airport station, puts the median last spring freeze around April 8 and the median first fall freeze around October 27. MU's lawn calendar says to start mowing in April and keep mowing at the regular height until growth stops in October or November. Zoysia lawns usually green up in late April. A regular schedule covers all of that, and you do not have to call every time the yard needs it.

07 / FAQ

Weekly & Biweekly Cuts questions, answered.

It depends on your grass and the time of year. MU Extension says fescue lawns can need cutting every five to six days in spring and fall and less in summer heat, and zoysia grows hardest in summer. Many yards do well with weekly cuts in spring and every other week in midsummer.

MU's lawn calendar says to start mowing in April and keep going until growth stops in October or November. MU's frost guide puts the median first fall freeze at the Joplin airport around October 27. Zoysia lawns usually green up in late April.

We move the cut a day or two and text you. Mowing soaked ground can leave ruts, and wet clippings clump on the lawn. A short delay is easier on the yard than forcing it.
