Most lawns around Joplin are one of two kinds of grass. MU Extension calls tall fescue the most popular lawn grass in Missouri, and Meyer zoysia the most popular warm-season one. There is an easy way to tell them apart. If the yard went brown over the winter, it is a warm-season grass like zoysia or bermudagrass. If it stayed green, it is a cool-season grass like tall fescue. That matters, because the two get mowed at very different heights, and a deck set for one is wrong for the other.
MU's mowing guide puts tall fescue at 3 to 4 inches and zoysia and other warm-season grasses at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches. It also says to take off no more than a third of the blade in one cut. Cutting short so the lawn needs mowing less often is, in MU's words, responsible for much lawn deterioration. So we set the height for your grass and keep it there. If part of the yard is shaded and part is in full sun, those two parts may even be different grasses.
A sharp blade matters more than most people think. MU says a dull blade beats and tears the grass, leaving frayed tips that give the lawn a whitish or brown cast. We leave clippings on the lawn when they are short enough to settle in, since MU research shows they do not cause thatch. When the ground is soaked after a hard rain, a mower can rut and pack the soil, so we may push a cut back a day rather than tear up your yard.
“made my yard look good”
It depends on the grass. MU Extension's mowing guide puts tall fescue at 3 to 4 inches and zoysia at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches. Most Joplin lawns are one or the other, and some have both. We check what you have before the first cut and set the deck to match.
Usually not. MU says clippings left on the lawn can supply up to 25 percent of a lawn's fertilizer needs, and its research shows they do not cause thatch. When the grass is wet or got very tall, clippings can clump and smother spots, so we deal with those instead of leaving them.
If the grass is wet but the ground is firm, we can mow. If the yard is soaked, a mower can leave ruts and pack the soil, so we may move the cut back a day. We will text you if the schedule shifts.
