Carl Junction is named for a man and a railroad. The city's history page says Charles L. Skinner platted the town in April 1877 and called it Carl, his original German first name, and that the junction was where two rail lines were set to cross. The first train came through on July 20, 1879. Most of the houses are far younger than that story. ACS 2024 numbers put the median home at 1997, with 43 percent built in 2000 or later, and close to nine in ten homes are single detached houses with a yard of their own.
The city splits into four wards, and they are a good map of the town: north of Pennell Street, the stretch between Center Creek and Pennell, Briarbrook, and Country Club Estates with Oscie Ora Acres. Carl Junction's code sets the grass limit at 10 inches on an established lawn and 15 inches on other land. Once police give 10 days' notice of a hearing, the owner has five days to cut it, or the city has it cut and sends a special tax bill, collected with other taxes, that carries 8 percent interest if unpaid. A lawn mowed every week or two never gets near that.
Shrubs have rules here too, and they are easy to miss. Section 220.040 keeps shrubs and other plants under three feet within 30 feet of a street corner, so drivers can see around them, and it keeps branches above seven feet over a sidewalk and twelve feet over a street. The city can trim what blocks the view and bill the owner. MU Extension adds the shape rule: keep a hedge wider at the base than the top, and trim most hedges at least twice a year. A corner lot hedge done that way stays full without blocking anyone.
Fall runs on a schedule. For 2026 the city's leaf pickup starts north of Center Creek on November 23, reaches Briarbrook November 30, Country Club Estates December 7 and Oscie Ora Acres December 14. Leaves have to be raked loose to the curb, not bagged, and the city warns that a crew that finds no leaves may not come back. The city's Public Works facility also takes yard waste drop-offs year round during its hours. Storms drop plenty to clear, too. NOAA logged an EF-1 tornado through Carl Junction on April 20, 2025 that brought down limbs and uprooted dozens of trees in very wet ground.

Leave a reviewTen inches on an established lawn and 15 inches on other land, under Section 215.220 of the city code. Lots of an acre or more only need a 15-foot strip mowed along the road and next to homes. After 10 days' notice of a hearing, the owner gets five days to cut it before the city does.
For 2026 the city lists north of Center Creek from November 23, Briarbrook from November 30, Country Club Estates from December 7 and Oscie Ora Acres from December 14. Leaves go to the curb loose, not in bags, before your start date. We can rake them out before your week comes up.
Yes. City code keeps shrubs and plants other than trees under three feet within 30 feet of a street corner, so they do not block drivers' view. The city can trim them after notice and bill the owner. Keeping a corner hedge trimmed low and shaped wider at the base avoids that.
